Philippines counts cost of China's fury in aftermath of HK tourist deaths in hostage-taking

China is angry after a violent hostage drama in the Philippines killed eight tourists from Hong Kong, and the Southeast Asian nation can do little to soothe the powerhouse, as a raft of visitor cancellations has hit the country's tourism industry.

Tens of thousands of people have marched in Hong Kong to denounce the Philippines and thousands of Chinese tourists canceled flight and hotel bookings. Two Chinese recipients of Asia's most prestigious award failed to show up for the Manila ceremony.

President Benigno Aquino III has asked for China's forgiveness while vowing "someone will pay" for the embarrassing official handling of the 11-hour hostage-taking Aug. 23 that unfolded live on television.

Eight tourists were killed before police snipers took down the gunman, a dismissed policeman demanding his job back. Survivors said he became enraged after watching police handcuff his brother for interfering in the negotiations.

Aquino promised an investigation that would be "unassailable" in under two weeks.

China is the country's third largest trading partner after the U.S. and Japan — two-way trade reached $6.7 billion last year — and its fury is taking its toll. Flag carrier Philippine Airlines and budget airline Cebu Pacific reported more than 1,000 cancelations from the Chinese territory of Hong Kong alone.

In the prime beach resort of Boracay, hundreds of Chinese tourists scrapped their bookings, said regional tourism director Edwin Trompeta. Losses could top half a million dollars, he said.

Emotions ran high in Hong Kong on Sunday when 80,000 people marched to show "the anger and unity of the Hong Kong people," lawmaker Cheung Man-kwong said. Hong Kongers blasted Manila police for what they called an amateurish rescue attempt.

Rep: Fantasia Was 'Totally Overwhelmed' by Married Woman's Accusations

Fantasia Barrino's manager is speaking out about the former "American Idol" champ's apparent mental state prior to her hospitalization in North Carolina.

Referring to Paula Cook's legal complaint against her estranged husband Antwaun Cook, in which Mrs. Cook accuses Barrino of ruining the marriage by having an affair Mr. Cook, Barrino's manager Brian Dickens says: "Fantasia read Mrs. Cook's complaint against Mr. Cook for the first time yesterday. She knows some of the allegations in Mrs. Cook's complaint are totally false. There are others she strongly doubts. There is plenty she does not know.

"Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused. She was totally overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention," Dickens says.

On Monday evening, the 26-year-old singer was hospitalized after taking an overdose of aspirin and a sleep aid, Dickens says. "Her injuries are not life threatening. She was dehydrated and exhausted at the time," he says, adding that Barrino is in stable condition and will be released from the hospital soon.

Dickens says that Barrino and Mr. Cook "dated on and off for about eleven months." He says Barrino "believed Mr. Cook when he told her he was not happy in his marriage and his heart was not in it. She believed him when he told her he and Mrs. Cook separated in the late summer of 2009."

"Celebrity" Flight Attendant gets Bail..

A JetBlue flight attendant who became an internet hero after storming out of a plane with an expletive-filled intercom address and an escape down the emergency chute had bail set at $US2,500 today.
Steven Slater, 39, captured the sympathy of frustrated travellers and airline industry workers yesterday with his theatrical departure that was provoked by an altercation with a passenger aboard a jet that had just arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy international airport.

He has yet to post bail.

Slater, a 20-year veteran of the airline industry, cursed at the passenger on the plane's public address, announced he was leaving, grabbed a couple of beers from the galley and slid down the emergency chute that he had deployed, officials and news reports said.

Police arrested him at his home in the borough of Queens and charged him with felony criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

A New York Daily News columnist called him a modern folk hero. After his court hearing was over, a Facebook page about him was "liked" by some 30,000 people.

"He's in a lot less trouble if he gets a jury of regular flyers," Fordham Law Professor Jim Cohen said.
